Position Summary

Humber Galleries seeks a temporary Gallery Assistant to expand our team during Winter 2018 programming, which features Indigenous art curated by Humber’s Aboriginal Resource Centre, Inuit independent films by Isuma, and new work by Visual Art and Design students at Humber. Reporting to the Curator, the Gallery Assistant will work independently to support the physical operations and day-to-day procedures of Humber Galleries. Primary responsibilities include: daily opening/closing procedure for North Space: monitoring the gallery 4 days per week during public hours, sharing information about programming with visitors, and maintaining exhibitions; supporting Humber Galleries’ team with aspects of the preparation, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions and public programs; redesigning Humber Galleries’ virtual operations filing system and archive; assembling documents, reports, spreadsheets and other materials; collaboratively contributing to the development of Humber Galleries’ vision for our physical spaces at North campus; providing administrative and research support to the Curator; and performing other duties as required. Duration of Need: 3 Months (February-May 2018)


The successful candidate will posses a minimum of a BFA. along with two years’ experience overseeing physical spaces. The role requires an individual who is confident and reliable working autonomously, especially operating heavy glass gallery doors on a daily basis in our exhibition space at Humber College’s North campus. Excellent kinaesthetic learning skills and a hands-on approach; proven knowledge of daily opening and closing routines for specialized business, organization, or department; a reputation for reliability and a trustworthy work ethic; a passion for Canadian contemporary arts and culture; and broad knowledge of a variety of visual arts media, materials, and techniques are required. A strong sense of self-direction and well-developed interpersonal skills are also required as are excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). Other qualifications include proficiency with both Mac and PC platforms.
